Busting stubborn skin myths with holistic acne expert, Meg Gaic

For the final instalment in our acne series, holistic acne expert Meg Gaic of Get Glow clears up stubborn acne myths to help you achieve healthy, glowing skin for good.

Myth: UV rays are good for acne

Fact: There was a time when we thought UV rays helped acne, but now we know that the risks far outweigh the benefits. UV rays cause damage to the skin, dark spots, and skin cancer. Plus, being out in the sun increases sweat and oil production which triggers breakouts.

There are new light therapy options on the market: opt for green light for hyperpigmentation, blue light for killing acne-causing bacteria, and red light to soothe inflammation.

Myth: Acne is no big deal and mostly affects teenagers

Fact: Acne can affect anyone at any time in their life. I know first-hand how chronic acne can damage your self esteem and mental health.

Mindset is a crucial part of my programs: I support clients in replacing the negative thoughts with positive affirmations along with other mental wellness exercises. I want people to come away from this experience happier, healthier, and ready to take on anything.

Myth: Everyone with acne should avoid chocolate, dairy, and greasy foods

Fact: Dietary triggers are unique to each person; I help clients understand their root causes of acne. Some people can tolerate dairy and some can’t! If you feel certain foods are breaking you out, I recommend a 70/30 approach to limiting those foods so you’re still able to live your life without stressing endlessly, which can actually cause the very acne you’re trying to combat.
