Crunching Through Barriers: How Three Canadian Sisters Are Redefining Healthy Snacking with Rawcology

In a market saturated with sugary granola bars and allergen-heavy snacks, three Canadian sisters, Megan Loach Tomulka, Tara Tomulka, and Laura Powadiuk. They decided it was time for a change. United by a shared passion for wellness and driven by their backgrounds in marketing, nutrition, and business, they founded Rawcology: a women-owned, Canadian snack company on a mission to revolutionize clean eating.

The Rawcology Origin Story: From Health Struggles to Market Solutions

The journey began not in a boardroom, but in personal struggles with health. “We each faced our dietary restrictions and frustrations trying to find snacks that were both safe and satisfying,” the sisters explain. That pain point sparked a purpose: to create snacks that don’t compromise on taste, nutrition, or inclusivity.

“We saw a real gap in the market,” they say. “There were very few options that were truly clean, plant-based, free of the top allergens, and enjoyable to eat.” This sparked the creation of Rawcology’s flagship products: their coconut chips and grain-free granolas, which are now enjoyed across Canada and gaining momentum internationally.

These snacks are more than just food, they’re functional fuel. “They’re gut-friendly, nutrient-rich, and made with real, whole-food ingredients. It’s food that makes you feel good on every level.”

From Start-Up Hurdles to Scaling Success

Launching a food brand, especially one centred on clean ingredients and allergen transparency, is never easy. “We faced the typical start-up roadblocks: sourcing quality suppliers, earning shelf space in competitive retail markets, and scaling production without losing our commitment to quality,” the sisters recall.

But those early roadblocks taught them the resilience they now consider key to their success. “You have to be creative, flexible, and relentlessly optimistic. Things won’t always go as planned but every challenge is a chance to learn and grow.”

Today, their challenges have evolved. “We’re working to keep up with increasing demand, innovate in a rapidly growing wellness category, and navigate supply chain issues that have become more complex in recent years,” they note. “But we love what we do. Each step forward is worth it.”

The Power of Family in Business

Working with family comes with its own set of dynamics, but for the Rawcology founders, it’s been their secret weapon. “There’s an unmatched level of trust and understanding,” they say. “Of course, we don’t always agree but we’ve learned how to communicate openly, value each other’s perspectives, and play to our strengths.”

This familial bond has helped them weather the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. “We support each other through everything, and that’s been a huge part of our success.”

Values First: Inclusivity, Sustainability, and Trust
From day one, Rawcology has been built on strong values: health, inclusivity, and sustainability. These aren’t just buzzwords—they guide every decision the sisters make.

“We’re committed to making snacking accessible for everyone, no matter their dietary needs,” they explain. “That’s why we’ve always stayed plant-based, organic, and free from the top 11 allergens.”

Their focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion extends to the workplace as well. “DEI isn’t optional—it’s essential,” they emphasize. “Diverse teams bring better ideas, more creativity, and better represent the people we serve. At Rawcology, we’re building a culture where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.”

Local Roots, Global Vision
As a proudly Canadian-owned company, Rawcology is strongly connected to the local business community. “Supporting Canadian businesses helps our communities grow and supports the local economy. It’s also better for the planet,” the sisters share.

“When you shop local, you’re supporting your neighbours. You’re choosing ethical business practices that care for people and the planet.”

What’s Next for Rawcology?
The future is looking bright. “We’re excited to grow our product line, reach new markets, and keep improving our sustainability efforts,” they say.

There are exciting things ahead—like a major new retail partnership launching in July 2025, and a brand-new snack line arriving in August 2025.

“We’re always thinking about what’s next,” they add. “It’s who we are. We want to keep creating snacks that people crave and feel good about eating.”

Lessons from the Journey

Tara, Megan, and Laura have learned a lot along the way and they’re quick to share those insights. “One of the biggest lessons is to stay true to your values, even when it’s the harder path,” they explain. “Also, trust your gut. It knows more than you think.”

And perhaps most importantly: surround yourself with people who challenge you and lift you up. “No one builds something meaningful alone. Lean on your community.”

Words of Wisdom for Future Female Founders

When asked what advice they’d give to aspiring women entrepreneurs, the sisters didn’t hesitate: Just start.

“Don’t wait for the perfect moment, it doesn’t exist. If you have a dream, take the first step. Build your support network, ask for help when you need it, and know that your voice matters. Women have incredible ideas, and the world needs more of them.”

Rawcology is more than just a food brand. It’s a mission-driven movement—one built on sisterhood, purpose, and a deep commitment to changing how we nourish ourselves and our communities.

Next time you’re in the snack aisle, think beyond the packaging. Choose products created with care, integrity, and intention, just like Rawcology.
