New Small-Group Cycling Journey through Norway’s UNESCO-Listed Fjords from Up Norway

Norwegian Travel Curator Offers 7-Day, Fully Supported Trip through Sunnmøre Alps and Geiranger-Trollstigen National Scenic Route, May 2027

Up Norway, Scandinavia’s premier sustainable luxury travel curator, will host a premium cycling journey through some of Norway’s most dramatic terrain. Offered May 22-28, 2027, the seven-day trip traces the jagged peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, the switchbacks of the Geiranger-Trollstigen National Scenic Route, and the Norangsdalen valley, one of the narrowest valleys in the world. Developed by avid cyclists and Up Norway founder Torunn Trosvang and travel curator Danny Dodd, who log over 6,200 miles a year, the itinerary is structured across five cycling stages for intermediate to experienced riders. Beginning and ending in the art nouveau city of Alesund with waterfront hot-cold hydrotherapy, additional itinerary highlights include climbs past mountain lakes, switchbacks on one of Europe’s most iconic mountain roads, fjord crossings, pedaling the “Queen’s Route” past centuries-old mountain pastures with tiny stone and turf houses, and more. Bikes equipped with Di2 electric gearing are provided from Fara, a Norwegian boutique brand founded in Oslo in 2015 by former professional cyclist Jeff Webb, or riders may bring their own. The trip is guided by Up Norway’s trusted partner of 10 years and Western Norway’s leading provider of guided outdoor experiences, Uteguiden. The collaboration draws on Uteguiden’s local knowledge and a shared commitment to nature encounters with a positive impact. Daily nutrition combines Nordic gastronomy with cycling performance needs. In May, the surrounding valleys are fully green, Valldal’s strawberry season is just opening, snow still sits on the peaks, the roads are quiet, and the light lasts past midnight.

Guided by the belief that presence matters, Up Norway handles all travel logistics so that travelers can be fully present, mentally and physically, to experience things on a deeper and more meaningful level. Premium fjord-view hotels at the end of each day are confirmed, from a beautifully restored art nouveau warehouse that offers the perfect maritime atmosphere to begin and reflect on one’s journey to two unique fjord bases. The first, tucked between wild rivers and strawberry fields, and then, an intimate hideaway located right at the water’s edge at the base of the majestic Sunnmøre Alps. Mornings include a premium breakfast and the preparation of a traditional Norwegian matpakke, or packed lunch, while evenings shift to recovery-focused, farm-to-table dinners featuring the region’s seasonal ingredients. A dedicated support vehicle follows the group on every stage carrying luggage, spare wheels, nutritional support, artisanal ride bars, hydration mixes, and local specialties.

Schedule Highlights:

  • Day 1: Arrival in Ålesund. Riders settle into Norway’s art nouveau seaside city, known locally as “the Venice of the North,” with a waterfront bathtub soak and a canal-side sauna session to prepare the muscles before a welcome dinner.
  • Day 2: Ålesund to Valldal. 43.5 miles, 3,937 ft elevation. The route takes riders into the Sunnmøre Alps, with two categorized climbs past mountain lakes and historic farms, a fjord crossing by ferry, and a boat transfer into Valldal.
  • Day 3: Trollstigen. 43.5 miles, 3,609 ft elevation. The centerpiece stage climbs to 23,123 ft above sea level via 11 switchbacks on one of Europe’s most iconic mountain roads.
  • Day 4: Valldal to Sæbø via Geirangerfjord. 40 miles, 2,624 ft elevation. A ferry crossing to Eidsdal precedes a sustained ¼ mile climb toward Geiranger, before a descent down the hairpin bends of the Eagle Road. Riders then enjoy recovery on a private cruise through the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord past the Seven Sisters waterfalls. A final ride through the Norangsdalen Valley, known as the Queen’s Route, concludes in Sæbø.
  • Day 5: Sæbø to Bjørke. 31 miles, 2,625 ft elevation. This more relaxed stage along the Hjørundfjord includes a lunch stop at a local producer in Bjørke and a private boat crossing back to the hotel.
  • Day 6: Sæbø to Ålesund. 43.5 miles, 2,953 ft elevation. The final stage passes remote communities and narrow roads beneath the Sunnmøre Alps. Then it’s a brief break on the ferry from Festøya before the last 12 miles back into Ålesund, for yoga, outdoor bath session, and final dinner.
  • Day 7: Departure.

Pricing for double occupancy is NOK 54 000 per person (approx. USD 5,400) and single rooms are available for a supplement of NOK 7,000 per person (approximately USD 700). The trip includes six nights of accommodations with breakfast and water views throughout, a cycling guide and host for the full journey, daily nutrition, private and public fjord boat crossings, bicycles provided by Fara Cycling, an outdoor bathtub session at Hotel Brosundet in Ålesund, a yoga session, and Up Norway’s digital travel guide. The trip is best suited to riders comfortable with multi-day cycling and sustained climbing, with roughly 2,485 to 3,107 miles of riding in the past year suggested as a fitness benchmark. The group trip is limited to 12 riders, accompanied by a cycling guide, an Up Norway host, and a support crew.
