Tonight CBC, APTN and Netflix jointly hosted the official Canadian screening of North of North — the new Canadian APTN, CBC and Netflix original comedy series set in Canada’s Arctic that was proudly shot in Nunavut — at Toronto’s TIFF Lightbox. Hosted by Kairyn Potts, a content creator, writer, and actor from Treaty 6 territory, and Shina Nova, an Inuk content creator based in Montreal, guests were instantly transported north of north the moment they stepped inside TIFF Lightbox. Two episodes from the hit homegrown Canadian series were screened, followed by an insightful panel discussion with the show’s cast and creators. A reception was hosted at Malaparte that saw internationally celebrated artist and musician Tanya Tagaq, who is originally from Ikaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay, Nunavut), perform a special acoustics.

North of North‘s main cast and crew were in attendance, including the show’s co-creators and executive producers Stacey Aglok MacDonald (Qanurli, The Grizzlies) and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril (Angry Inuk, The Grizzlies); executive producer Miranda De Pencier (Anne with an E, Beginners, The Grizzlies); lead star Anna Lambe (True Detective: Night Country, Trickster) and co-stars Maika Harper (Law and Order: Toronto, Burden of Truth), Braeden Clarke (Little Bird, Outlander), Mary Lynn Rajskub (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 24), Bailey Poching, Zorga Qaunaq, Keira Belle Cooper and Nutaaq Simmonds. Other crew and notable individuals from the series, APTN, CBC, Netflix and the Canadian screen sector were in attendance; as were media, social media content creators and community changemakers from various diverse communities.
Filmed in Iqaluit, Nunavut, North of North stars Anna Lambe as lead character Siaja, a young Inuk woman who dreams of reinventing herself in her tiny Arctic community of Ice Cove, a town where everybody knows your business. After a spontaneous — and extremely public — exit from her marriage, Siaja finds herself navigating the unpredictable, and often hilarious, highs and lows that come with relationships, motherhood, a new job, and finding your way. The series also stars Maika Harper, Keira Belle Cooper, Kelly William, Braeden Clarke, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Jay Ryan, Zorga Qaunaq, Bailey Poching and Nutaaq Doreen Simmonds. North of North is an APTN, CBC and Netflix original series and is created, executive produced and written by writer and producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald and filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril of Red Marrow Media and executive produced by Miranda De Pencier of Northwood Entertainment.
North of North made its premiere first in Canada January 7, 2025 on CBC and APTN. Episodes are currently available to stream in Canada on CBC Gem, CBC’s free streaming service, and APTN lumi. The season finale (episode 8) is slated to air in Canada next Tuesday, February 18 on CBC and APTN. The series will then launch globally on Netflix this Spring 2025.

Since North of North debuted in Canada, the series has quickly resonated with Canadians (and international audiences outside of Canada) of all backgrounds from coast to coast to coast. The series continues to spark thousands of organic interactions on social media, with audiences actively discussing the show and its characters online. North of North is the most-watched new CBC series and one of the top 5 most-watched programs on CBC Gem overall this winter. It’s also the second highest-rated new CBC series since the fall. North of North is also the top-performing new scripted show on APTN this winter. It is among the top five most-watched programs and the top new program on APTN lumi.
