AI Social Media Red Flags: What You Need To Know
By: Amber Mac
It’s easier to post a paid AI deepfake get-rich-quick scam impersonating a media outlet on Facebook than it is to post the actual real news. I’m paraphrasing the words of Kevin Newman who joined The AmberMac Show a few days ago about why he and a group of volunteers are creating a fact-checking bot (see video below).
We’ve all seen firsthand how these AI scams are breaking Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. On a daily basis, friends and family email me to get help trying to debunk fake messages they receive or video ads they saw within the Meta ecosystem. At dinner tables with colleagues, this disinformation from Facebook unintentionally seeps into our conversations and my Instagram inbox is flooded with people trying to decipher AI voice scams that sound like people they know.
We can no longer look out for red flags such as poor grammar or low-quality video in these messages and posts because AI is increasingly making them look and sound real. These include romance scams, crypto scams, employment scams, and let’s not fool ourselves, foreign interference.
I could go on and on and on, but more than anything, I want to share a few tips to help you stay safe:
● Do not rely on Facebook, Instagram, or X as sole sources for your news. Sure, there might be some quality information that seeps to the top from sources you can trust, but you’re better off supplementing reading and viewing with a few good news sites outside of these platforms.
● Do not reply to voice messages on social media sites. If you get a direct audio message on Instagram from a well-known celebrity or casual acquaintance that seems fishy, it probably is. AI voice cloning is on the rise. It’s increasingly common for these scammers to pretend to be someone you know to steal your data. Always verify these messages with a direct phone call to the person you know or a face-to-face conversation if possible. Soon enough, these fake voice messages will be fake video messages, and it will be even harder to know what’s real and what’s not.
● Do not waste this opportunity to push for better tech regulation. Among too many of our political leaders, digital literacy is sorely lacking. There is no way that we can move our country into the future without understanding today’s AI threats and opportunities.
We will be doing more work on this growing issue, so thanks for reading each week and make sure you subscribe to our new podcast (coming up next week, we have some tips on deepfake audio and video laws and what’s still missing). Be safe out there.
