August is Hair Loss Awareness Month

The Latest Tips and Important Tips From Evolve Guest Contributor Dr. Kristy Bailey

With centuries of hair loss being accepted as a side effect of aging, many still believe the condition is irreversible. According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, 40% of women will experience some degree of hair loss due to hormonal imbalances, and over 50% of men experience hair thinning starting as early as their teenage years. Four out of five men have some degree of baldness by age 70.

Often associated with men, hair loss is a condition that can be triggered by various factors, including genetics, postpartum, hormonal changes, and side effects from treatments, leaving those affected experiencing strong emotional reactions, including feeling a loss of control of their bodies and a decline in their self-confidence. Thankfully, the hair restoration industry has been working non-stop to find a solution to this universal, impactful problem. After years of taboo and silent suffering, Double Board-certified Dermatologist and Hair Transplant expert Dr. Bailey, is happy to confirm that the old days of angst are over.

To mark National Hair Loss Awareness Month, observed in August of every year, Evolve had the chance to speak with Toronto’s #1 rated Dermatologist and founder of the Hair Transplant Centre Toronto, Dr. Kristy Bailey, about the latest innovative treatments that promise to restore the good old days of thick hair and vitality to those affected by the condition.

With treatments targeting areas beyond the scalp, such as sideburns, eyebrows and beards, these are Dr. Bailey’s favorite and recommended procedures that both men and women suffering from hair loss can try to return to their glory days:

1: FUE Hair transplantation – The one-day procedure to permanently obtain thick hair for the rest of your life.

Unlike traditional hair transplant methods, FUE is minimally invasive. The procedure involves extracting individual hair follicles directly from the scalp’s thicker areas, typically from the back and side of the scalp onto the top of the scalp, using a precise micro-punch tool. This method leaves no linear scars and is less painful, making the recovery process quicker and more comfortable.

While popular among men, it also offers significant benefits for women experiencing hair loss or thinning, as the transplanted hair is resistant to the hormones that cause genetic hair loss. Plus, Dr. Bailey’s favourite detail is that advanced FUE transplant techniques specialized for women allow patients to achieve remarkable hair restoration results without needing to shave their heads for the procedure!

2: PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) – Perfect for steady growth.

If you are looking for a progressive hair restoration method, Dr. Bailey swears by PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin). The novel technique treats hair loss or alopecia, yielding noticeable results because of their capability to stimulate cells responsible for hair growth.  Each PRP for hair loss & PRF session lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour. After extracting a small volume of blood from your arm, it is centrifuged, and the platelet-rich portion of the blood is extracted with its “powerhouse” of growth factors that is later micro-injected into the scalp, where the hair loss occurs.

Minimally invasive, its best results are achieved with a minimum of six sessions spaced four weeks apart. Patients who succeed in these treatments generally undergo maintenance sessions once a year to maintain their existing hair growth and avoid hair loss.

PRP for hair loss and PRF for hair restoration are recommended treatments for men and women who need to increase their hair density due to genetic hair thinning or postpartum hair loss.

3: Theradome Laser Hair Growth Helmet – Effective at-home treatment.

Suppose you are looking for a home treatment. In that case, the Theradome Laser Helmet is a clinically proven, FDA (and Dr. Bailey) approved hair growth treatment that uses low laser light technology to stimulate follicle and tissue repair, reverse hair miniaturization, and promote hair growth. In clinical studies, the Theradome has been shown to grow 20 new hairs per square centimeter, helping up to 90% of hair loss sufferers with no side effects and virtually no contraindications.

While the Theradome is not an overnight solution for hair restoration, patients can begin to see results after three months of use. It can also be used long-term, twice a week, as part of your hair care regimen with no downtime.

4: Vitamin supplements – Perfect for patients who want to solve the problem from the inside out.

Everyday stress, poor nutrition, age, genetics, medication, and damage caused by the environment can impact the health of your hair and lead to breakage and excess shedding. If your diet lacks nutrients, vitamins, and minerals like iron, it can affect the condition and strength of your hair. To solve this problem, Dr. Bailey swears by the Viviscal dietary supplements that target problem areas such as the scalp, hair follicles, and hair strands. The Viviscal Hair Nourishment System is a 100% drug-free supplement to promote healthier, fuller, and thicker hair. The Viviscal Hair Nourishment System nourishes the scalp and adds volume in as little as three or four months. These vitamin supplements have shown in randomized controlled trials to increase the number of hairs on your head!

National Hair Loss Awareness Month educates the public about how common and treatable hair loss is today. The treatments mentioned are just a handful of the numerous treatments available for patients today, making it clear that hair loss is no longer considered a life-changing event but just something you can brush off.
