As the world watches this summer’s global competition in Paris, why not bring some of that athletic spirit to your backyard with fun summer games for your dog? CANINE SWIMMING
While your dog might not be aiming for Michael Phelps’ or Katie Ledecky’s record, swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise for dogs. Set up a kiddie pool or visit a dog-friendly beach and toss floating toys for your pup to retrieve.
FETCH-A-THON
Create a mini decathlon for your dog with various fetch challenges. Use different objects like balls, frisbees, and sticks. Use a timer to track how fast your dog can retrieve.
AGILITY COURSE
Channel the spirit of gold-medal gymnasts by setting up an agility course in your yard. Use hula hoops for jumps, cardboard boxes for tunnels, and poles for weaving. Guide your dog through the course, encouraging balance, coordination, and quick thinking.
TUG OF WAR
While not an official sport, tug-of-war captures the strength and determination seen in wrestling matches. Use a rope toy for a friendly match with your dog, but remember to let them win occasionally to keep their confidence up!
VOLLEYBALL
Use a large beach ball and encourage your dog to “bump” it back to you with their nose or paws. Set up a low net and see if you can rally back and forth. This game improves coordination and is great for multiple dogs.
Remember, just like professional athletes, dogs need proper training, hydration, and rest. Always have fresh water available and watch for signs of overheating or exhaustion, and tailor activities to your dog’s age, breed, and fitness level.
